3-year Wellcome Trust funded PhD Studentship ‘Sex Education in Films’

3-year Wellcome Trust funded PhD Studentship ‘Sex Education in Films’ at

the Centre for the History of Medicine and Disease (CHMD), Durham

University, United Kingdom

The studentship will be available as of October 2009

We are looking to appoint a candidate for a fully funded three-year PhD

studentship as part of the CHMD/Northern Centre of the History of Medicine

Wellcome Trust Strategic Award.

The successful applicant will research sex education films (British and/or

German, depending on language skills). With few exceptions (e.g. Tim Boon,

Ursula v. Keitz, Elizabeth Lebas, Ramon Reichert), films in general have

not received much attention from historians of medicine, bodies or

sexualities. Taking samples from different film genres (film productions

for cinemas, TV, and school teaching; animated films, silent films,

documentaries and feature films) the focus of the PhD project will be on

the construction of heterosexual bodies through films that have been

produced to sexually enlighten the young. The project will be supervised

by Dr Lutz Sauerteig (CHMD, Durham University).

Applications are invited from suitably qualified students who have a

background in film analysis. Candidates should have a First Class or Upper

Second Class Honours Degree (or equivalent) and a Masters Degree in an

appropriate discipline (e.g. Film Studies, Media Studies).

The studentship includes fees at the Home/EU rate and a living allowance

of approx. £18,000 in the first year, rising to approx. £21,000 in the

third year.

For further information or informal enquiries about the studentship,

please contact Dr Lutz Sauerteig ([email protected]).

Please send a copy of your CV, with the names and addresses of three

referees, plus a statement outlining your academic interests and reasons

for wishing to undertake this research project to Katherine Smith

([email protected])

The deadline for applications is 16 March 2009.

Interviews of candidates will be held later in March.
