A newly revised one-year MA programme in History and Philosophy of Biology.

The University of Exeter (UK) has a newly revised one-year MA programme in History and Philosophy of Biology. http://huss.exeter.ac.uk/sociology/philosophyofbiology/ <blocked::http://huss.exeter.ac.uk/sociology/philosophyofbiology/> The MA links to a number of other teaching and research areas at Exeter , including philosophy of science, history and philosophy of medicine, and sociology of science and technology. Syllabus topics range from evolution research to the sociopolitics of biology. It also covers philosophically neglected areas such as microbiology and bioinformatics, and the history of the philosophy of biology (of particular interest to this list).

The programme is set in a remarkable research environment, associated with Egenis, the ESRC Centre for Genomics in Society ( http://www.genomicsnetwork.ac.uk/egenis/ <blocked::http://www.genomicsnetwork.ac.uk/egenis/>). It is ranked as the best place in the UK to study philosophy of biology, and is highly regarded internationally. Lecturers include John Dupré, Paul Griffiths, Sabina Leonelli, Lenny Moss, Staffan Müller-Wille and Maureen O’Malley. Throughout the year, students are welcome to discuss research and learning with the lecturers as well as social scientists and biologists in the Centre. Students are also able to take advantage of the many seminars, reading groups, workshops and conferences hosted by Egenis, all of which are relevant to the programme. The high level of interaction with staff and fellow-students means that students experience a very personalized approach to their intellectual development.

MA students will be qualified to pursue PhD study, as well as a variety of careers requiring a critical understanding of the biological and biomedical sciences, such as education, science journalism, science/health administration and policy-making, museum curation and scientific research.
