This new full-time post is available from 1 April 2009 on a fixed term basis until 31 March 2012, subject to final approval from the Wellcome Trust.

We seek an Associate Research Fellow to work on a Wellcome Trust funded project on the information processing technologies employed by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) in his taxonomic and pharmacological projects (see:

The successful applicant will be based at the Centre for Medical History in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Exeter.

The post-holder will also be expected to spend part of her/his time at the library and archive of the Linnean Society of London (which holds Linnaeus’s papers). The study will be carried out in collaboration with academics at the ESRC-Centre for Genomics in Society (Egenis; also part of University of Exeter) and the Natural History Museum London.

The post holder will also be able to draw on the research culture of the Centre for Medical History.

The candidate is expected to have:

· A PhD (or equivalent research skills and experience) in history of science, history of medicine, classics, or cultural studies
· Experience of work with early modern manuscripts
· Familiarity with the history of natural history, botany in particular
· Good Latin skills

It would be an advantage if the candidate also had:

· Skills in French, German, Italian, or Swedish.
· Good botanical knowledge.

The starting salary will be from £24,152pa on Grade E23
