British Society for the History of Science Outreach Day

Stamford Hall, University of Leicester, Saturday 4th July 2009

Do you teach or communicate the history of science, technology or medicine to under-18s or the wider public? Do you want to know more about cutting-edge learning resources and techniques in the field?

Then why not sign up for the Outreach Day at the British Society for the History of Science annual conference. Some special BSHS bursaries are available, and you might be eligible for one.

Outreach Day Programme

9.30 – Welcome

9.45-11 – Natural Mimics – a practical session about Leicester-born naturalist and renowned butterfly-catcher Henry Walter Bates (1825-92).

Participants will explore his Amazonian travels and create a letter on Bates’ discoveries to present at a Victorian scientific society.

11.30-1 Horrible Science – history of science as if kids mattered – how can we present history of science and technology most effectively to the pre-18 audience? This discussion session will focus on the irreverent ‘Horrible Science’ and ‘Horrible History’ series.

1-2  Lunch

2-3.30 Science and Islam: discover the astrolabe – an opportunity to make a model of an instrument developed largely by Islamic astronomers and mathematicians. Learn how to use it to plot star positions and calculate the times of sunrise and sunset.

4-5.30 The Tables Turned – a role play of a Victorian dinner-party séance showing ‘spiritualistic’ phenomena of table-rapping, ghostly messages and emanations. Interviewing the characters, the audience will explore the problems of facts, observations and orthodoxy.

5.30 Networking – a chance to end the day with a drink and chat about the day

6.30-10 pm Evening reception at National Space Centre (then return to Stamford Hall)

NB the cost of the conference dinner is NOT included in the Outreach Day bursary

The full day rate for the BSHS conference (including lunch and refreshments) on 4th July is £60 Further details about the conference (2-5 July 2009), including travel information, online registration, and draft programme are available at http://www.le.ac.uk/hi/news/bshs2009.htm and soon at the main BSHS webpages: http://www.bshs.org.uk/
