Brno, 1866.

Brno = Brünn Brünn is the German name of the city Brno, the capital of Moravia, which at Mendel’s time was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. It belongs to the Czech Republic today, and is its second biggest city. By the 1840s, it had become known as the “Manchester of Central Europe” for its brewing and textile industries; see Herman Freudenberger, The Industrialization of a Central European City: Brno and the Fine Woollen Industry in the 18th Century (Edington: Pasold Research Fund 1977).
