In this generation, alongside the dominating traits the recessive traits reappear as well in their full peculiarity, and they do this in a decisively pronounced average proportion of 3 : 1, such that among 4 plants each from this generation 3 plants receive the dominating and one plant the recessive characteristic.

dominating = dominirenden See p. 10, s. 14.

recessive = recessiven See p. 10, s. 14.

in their full peculiarity = in ihrer vollen Eigenthümlichkeit Bateson has “with their full peculiarities”, Sherwood “their individuality fully revealed”. Eigenthümlichkeit may also be translated as “idiosyncrasy”, and refers to the properties that make a thing, or class of things, this thing, and no other. As Sherwood’s translation suggests, Mendel may be expressing the observation here that the character pairs he studied did not form any intermediates in hybrid union, as stated on p. 12, s. 7. In addition, he may have been thinking of the fact that the recessive traits that reappear in the first generation of hybrids breed true in the following generations, as he explains in the following section of his paper.

proportion = Verhältnis See p. 3, s. 8.

characteristic = Character See p. 7, s. 8.
