ASSISTANT PROFESSOR POSITION

The Life Sciences in the 20th and 21st Centuries

The Department of Science & Technology Studies at Cornell University seeks an outstanding scholar for a tenure-track assistant professor position in the ethnographic, historical, and/or social studies of the 20th and/or 21st century life sciences. Areas of interest include but are not limited to biology, biomedicine, biotechnology, ecology, neurobiology, and the biological aspects of environmental sciences. A Ph.D. in science & technology studies or a closely related field, such as anthropology of science, history of science, or sociology of science, is required.  The successful candidate will have an active research program studying the 20th and/or 21st century biological sciences; will participate in the training of Ph.D. students in science & technology studies; and will extend the reach of the department’s teaching in the history of the life sciences (especially in two undergraduate majors, “Biology & Society” and “Science & Technology Studies”). Applicants with one of two broad (partly overlapping) research and teaching profiles could meet departmental needs: (1) a scholar with historical training, a research and teaching program centered in the 20th century, and also the ability to teach contemporary topics in undergraduate courses, such as Life Sciences & Society or Ethical Issues in Health & Medicine; or

(2) a scholar with training in contemporary social studies of science, a research and teaching program centered in the last several decades, and also the ability to teach undergraduate courses in the history of the 20th century life sciences and/or medicine.

The deadline for application is October 31, 2012.  If you are interested in this position, please apply on-line through the following website: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/1903.  Applicants should submit a cover letter outlining research and teaching interests, curriculum vitae, a sample of written work and one paragraph descriptions of two or three courses, as well as three letters of reference.  If you have any specific questions about the position, please contact Ms. Ryan Heichel, [email protected].  Cornell University is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer and educator.
