Contemporary technologies (mobile phones, ID cards) and the history of modern science and technology; policies for biotechnology and genetics, military technology and arms limitation, and the sociology of science; twentieth-century evolutionary studies, Darwin and Darwinism, exploration and empire, the history of natural history and museum, and science in London; the history and philosophy of the physical sciences, and general philosophy of science; history of science in the ancient world, especially the history of cosmology and the relations between magic and science; public dimensions of science and the history of science in the UK in the 20th Century; evidence based medicine and the nature of clinical expertise; relationship between science and public,the development of science communication, and public engagement with science and technology; philosophy of science, and history and philosophy of physics; science communication and application of molecular physics to astronomical environments;
