Friends Under the Microscope: Researching the History of Quakers, Science and the Natural World

Edward Boyle Library, University of Leeds, Saturday 15 May 2004, 12.30 — 4.30pm

This conference is organized jointly by the University of Hull Brynmor Jones Library and Leeds University Library. It follows on from the work of the Yorkshire Quaker Heritage Project and is the second in a series of annual conferences on various aspects of Quaker history. The conference aims to raise awareness of the potential for research into the history of Quaker involvement in science, medicine and natural history. The papers presented will shed light on the compatibility of science with religious belief by examining the place of science within the Quaker community and the particular contribution made by Quaker scientists and naturalists.

Speakers will include Professor Geoffrey Cantor (University of Leeds), Christopher Hilton (Wellcome Library), and Geoffrey Morries (Birmingham University).

Registration £10. Further information can be obtained from Helen Roberts ([email protected]), Assistant Archivist, Brynmor Jones Library, The University of Hull, Hull HU6 7RX, Tel: 01482-465265.
