CALL FOR PAPERS FOR A TWO-DAY CONFERENCE:

From Western Medicine to Global Medicine: The Hospital Beyond the West

18-19 March 2004 – Osler-McGovern Centre, Green College, University of Oxford, 13 Norham Gardens, Oxford

Organisers: Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine, Oxford

This path-breaking conference will bring together researchers and scholars working on hospitals in a Non-western context.

It will examine the emergence and reception of hospitals in places as wide-ranging as South Asia, Southern Africa, Iran and South America.

The conference will address diverse themes and issues such as:

o Hospitals and the global emergence of Western medicine o Hospital Architecture o Medical pluralism and non-Western medical practices and practitioners o Dissemination of medical knowledge including new specializations, research and medical education o Patients’ perceptions and experiences o Urban and rural medical provision o Missionary medicine o Politics and Governance

This conference will enhance an understanding of the politics and interplay of race, class, gender and the environment in the making of a global medicine. The conference proceedings will be published and will contribute to a rethinking of the existing paradigms of colonial levitra medicine.
