Taught Programmes

Undergraduate Programmes

At undergraduate level, the histories of science, technology and medicine are mostly taught alongside other disciplines, such as history in general, the philosophy of science, or the sciences themselves; increasingly, though, some degree programmes allow more specialisation, especially in the later years of the course.

This list covers those undergraduate degree programmes which include at least a minor core component in HSTM or a related area. Note that some institutions not on this list provide some HSTM teaching on an option basis to students on other programmes: for further details, see the profiles in the full Directory of Institutions.

Intercalated BSc courses, designed for medical students and mostly covering the history and perception of medicine, are also included in this list.

Taught Postgraduate Programmes

HSTM study is widely available at Master's level, both on dedicated programmes and in other disciplinary contexts. Teaching at this level tends to be close to the research interests of staff, so looking at the overall profile of a department or centre (see the Directory of Institutions) will help to give you an idea of the likely focus. Interests developed during a taught Master's often form the basis of PhD or other research work.
