Lecturer in Science & Technology Studies
Science & Technology Studies at UCL is an inter-disciplinary department which is active in teaching and research in the history, philosophy and social studies of science. The department currently has eight teaching staff and a number of affiliated experts. We offer three undergraduate degrees and have around 60 undergraduates and 15 doctoral students. Undergraduate courses offered in the department also attract a wide variety of students within UCL. Staff within the department are also involved with teaching on the MSc in History of Science, Medicine and Technology offered as part of the London Centre for the History of Science, Medicine and Technology. In the 2001 RAE, Science and Technology Studies was rated 5 overall, with all staff split between departments and receiving either 5 or 5 rating.
We are seeking to appoint a suitably qualified lecturer, with teaching and research interests in science and technology policy, social studies of science and/or science communication. Applicants should have a PhD in an appropriate subject or be close to submitting their thesis. This full-time appointment carries a three year probationary period and the successful applicant should be in a position to take up the position on August 1, 2004.
The main teaching duties of the post will involve: 7 Teaching undergraduate courses within the areas of science and technology policy, social studies of science and/or science communication. 7 Supervision of third year undergraduate dissertation students 7 Supervision of doctoral students
The Department encourages strong interdisciplinary connections both in research and teaching. The successful applicant will be expected to be active in research in science and technology policy, social studies of science or science communication. A contemporary or historical approach to these areas will be welcomed. The position will also involve pastoral and administrative duties appropriate to the post. The appointment will start on August 1, 2004, and will be on the Lecturer A pay scale (#22,191-#25,451p.a. plus #2134p.a. London Allowance).
