Location: Illinois, United States
Institution Type: College/University
Position Type: Post-doctoral Fellow
The Department of Philosophy at the University of Chicago and the Committee on Conceptual and Historical Studies of Science invite applications for an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation two-year teaching-research fellowship, starting in September 2009. Recipients should have the PhD within the last five years, and not already hold a tenure-track position. Their expertise should preferably be in the philosophy and history of the life sciences (broadly conceived), with substantial knowledge and research interests in a particular area of recent research or engaging the internal history of a science, though able to engage colleagues and students beyond a narrow range.
We offer unique opportunities for interactions among philosophers, historians, and scientists across the Darwinian and Human Sciences, and relevant humanities. Thru participation in the CHSS workshops in History and Philosophy of Science, the Human Sciences, and SOIT, other philosophy workshops and seminars and the reading group in philosophy of biology, they will interact regularly with faculty and students in both units. Robert Richards and William Wimsatt will serve as faculty mentors. Teaching responsibilities: one graduate and one upper-division undergraduate course per year. Applications should include a cover letter, CV, evidence of teaching, three letters of reference, and at least one recent writing sample (non-returnable). Applications (apart from letters of reference) should be submitted both in hard copy and via email by February 2, 2009 to be assured consideration. Electronic applications (MS Word and/or PDF) should be emailed to [email protected] with subject heading “MELLON POST-DOC-PHILSCI.” Paper applications should be mailed to: Mellon Search Committee, CHSS, 1126 East 59th Street, Room SS205, University of Chicago, Chicago, IL 60637
