Postdoctoral Fellowship: “From Invention to Innovation: Cultural Traditions of Technical Development in China from the 15th to 19th century”

The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin invites applications from outstanding junior scholars for a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship beginning 1 October, 2006, in conjunction with the establishment of the research project “From Invention to Innovation: Cultural Traditions of Technical Development in China from the 15th to 19th century” by Dagmar Schäfer. Proposals should focus on the issue of knowledge transmission in the field of practical knowledge in China in a historical context. The project concentrates on the period between 15th-19th centuries. Applications from scholars of all nationalities and disciplines are welcome; the colloquium language is English. It is expected that candidates will be able to present their own work and discuss that of others fluently in that language. The candidate should have proficient skills in Modern Chinese language. He/She should be able to discuss classical Chinese confidently (Japanese, French, German reading ability are conducive). Applications may be submitted in German or English.

Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. no later than August 2006 and no earlier than 2002.
