Science, technology and industry (STI) collections are widely perceived to be undervalued and underused within museums, with few specialist staff caring for them.

What is the true picture, and what can we be doing to strengthen the sector for the future?

This one-day conference funded by Arts Council England will look at the current state of STI collections in store and on display.

Workshops will explore the most pressing needs of staff with collections responsibilities, whilst a range of speakers will explore best practice in engaging with diverse audiences.

Speakers to include:

  • Alex Dawson, The Collections Trust: recent research into STI collections and curatorial needs
  • Stuart Burch, University of Nottingham: trends in current STI displays
  • Graeme Gooday, University of Leeds: making academic partnerships work
  • Lorna Williams: creating engaging family exhibits at Thinktank

There will also be an opportunity to tour the campus to see some of the dispersed displays from University of Leeds’ varied collections.

Please note that a small charge of £5 will be collected on the day as a contribution towards catering costs.
