The Hugh MacColl Centenary Conference

Boulogne sur Mer, 9-10 October 2009

On the occasion of the centenary of the Scottish mathematician, philosopher and novelist Hugh MacColl (1837 — 1909), a commemorative workshop on his life and work will be organised from 9 to 10 October 2009 in Boulogne sur Mer (France). MacColl was born, raised and educated in Scotland. After a few years working in different areas of Great Britain, he moved to Boulogne sur Mer, where he developed the greater part of his work and went to become a French citizen. MacColl was a pioneer mathematician and logician who introduced pluralism to modern logic. In addition, he wrote several works of fiction and essays on Victorian issues and religious thoughts. Contributions to the workshop are invited on any aspect of MacColl’s life and work, including his relationship with his contemporaries. A list of invited speakers will be announced soon. The publication of the proceedings is expected. Interested contributors are invited to send a short abstract (less than 300 words) before 15 March 2009 to: [email protected]

The organisers: Jacques Dubucs (Paris) Shahid Rahman and Juan Redmond (Lille) Gerhard Heinzmann and Amirouche Moktefi (Nancy)
