Wellcome Prize PhD studentships

Wellcome Prize PhD studentships in the contemporary history of health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Centre for History in Public Health. The Centre for History in Public Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine invites applications for two doctoral studentships funded by a Wellcome Trust enhancement award in the history of medicine. We seek outstanding candidates whose work would fall within the core interests of the historians at the School, which are the contemporary history of public health and health services. They will work under the supervision of Professor Virginia Berridge, Head of Centre or with Dr. Martin Gorsky, Senior Lecturer. The Centre has a particular focus on the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It benefits from its unique position at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, where historians work alongside specialists in public health, epidemiology and health services research. The School is known internationally as a lively hub of research and postgraduate teaching, dedicated to its mission of improving health worldwide and informing policy and practice. This setting provides an important opportunity for historians to engage with live issues in public health and health services and bring the perspective of the past to bear on current debates. Areas in which suitable historical projects could be proposed include ( but are not limited to):· the contemporary history of public health and health promotion, nationally and internationally.· the rise and use of the mass media in health education and the central organisation of health education since 1968.· the role of screening within public health.· the post 1945 history of illicit drug policy, both nationally and internationally.· the post 1945 history of alcohol policy, in particular its recent history· the role of voluntarism in health since 1945.· environmental health in the urban context· the impact of war on British health services in the 20th century· private medical insurance in Britain since 1948 Further information about the Centre can be found at www.lshtm.ac.uk/history/ and details of the School’s requirements are available at: www.lshtm.ac.uk/prospectus/research. Applicants will normally be expected to have an M.A. or M.Sc. in a relevant area, with an historical component. Informal enquiries should be made to Professor Berridge ([email protected]) or to Dr.Gorsky ([email protected]). Application forms are available from The Registry, 50 Bedford Square, London WC1B 3DP, UK. Telephone: +44 (0)20 7927 2239, fax: +44 (0)20 7323 0638, e-mail: [email protected], website: www.lshtm.ac.uk/courses Closing date for applications: 4th April 2005
