Wellcome Trust PhD Studentship in History of Medicine

Wellcome Trust PhD Studentship in History of Medicine, London School of
Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

The Centre for History in Public Health at the London School of Hygiene &
Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) invites applications for a doctoral studentship
funded by a Wellcome Trust enhancement award.  The topic can be in the
history of public health policy, including  subjects such as drugs,
alcohol, smoking, diet; or the history of health services in Britain since
1930.  Supervision will be by Dr. Martin Gorsky or Professor Virginia
Berridge, dependent on topic.

The Centre has a particular focus on the 20th and 21st centuries. It
benefits from its unique position at LSHTM, where historians work
alongside specialists in public health, epidemiology, health services
research and drug and alcohol research. This setting provides an important
opportunity for historians to engage with live issues in health policy.

Funding: The Studentship will cover tuition fees at Home/EU level and an
annual stipend in the first year and thereafter for three years in total.
Please be aware that non-EU applicants will be liable for paying the
difference between Home/EU and overseas PhD fees. Details of the Tuition
Fees can be found at: www.lshtm.ac.uk/prospectus/howto.

Eligibility: Applicants should be qualified to Masters level in either
history of medicine or in twentieth century British history, or in a
cognate area.

How to Apply: Applications initially should be made to Dr Martin Gorsky
(history of health services topics), or Professor Virginia Berridge
(history of public health policy topics) on 1-2 sides of A4 paper
outlining the proposed research, and accompanied by a Curriculum Vitae.
Candidates will be interviewed and the successful applicant will be asked
to complete a full application form.
Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact Dr Martin Gorsky (e-mail:
[email protected]) for health services topics, or Professor
Virginia Berridge (e-mail: [email protected]) for public
health policy topics, preferably by e-mail, to discuss their proposed
research area before completing their application.
Application forms can be requested from Registry (e-mail:
[email protected]), or from the School’s website

Deadline for application  is 15 May 2009.

Interviews will be held in June and the studentship will start in
September/October 2009.
