The BSHS is delighted to award the second Ayrton Prize, for digital engagement in the history of science, technology and medicine, to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for their project REACH – Raising Engineering Awareness through the Conduit of History.
This valuable set of educational resources, which has the potential to grow significantly through collaborations in the future, is easily-navigable and represents an important step in raising the profile of the history of science, technology and medicine by inspiring engineers of the future. The invitation to teachers to work collaboratively with the developers to generate new content highlights how new digital resources can be the focus of exciting joint ventures. The introduction of primary sources and hands-on activities brings historical changes in science, technology and medicine to life.
Ultimately, REACH sets out to provide “an opportunity to expose students to the different ways that science and technology interrelate and play out in society”, highlighting the importance of the social and cultural context of scientific practice.
