Doctoral Programme: Naturwissenschaften im historischen Kontext/The Sciences in Historical Context

University of Vienna, Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies, in cooperation with the Faculties of Life Sciences, Mathematics, Philosophy/Education and Physics

The Doctoral Program “Naturwissenschaften im historischen Kontext/The Sciences in Historical Context” announces the award of up to 12 doctoral student positions beginning 1 October 2006.

For the first time the University of Vienna offers a Ph.D. program in this field, to be completed in six semesters. The aims of the program are: to offer a structured interdisciplinary curriculum in History and Philosophy of Science with the collaboration of international visitors, and to make possible the joint supervision of dissertations by historians/historians and philosophers of science and natural scientists/mathematicians.

Participation in the study program is required; members of the IK must therefore reside continuously in Vienna. Participation in the annual “Vienna International Summer University” in the second half of July is also part of the program. Positions are funded for three years. Recipients are employed half time (20 hours/week) at the University of Vienna; this includes up to 10 hours/week in teaching and research tasks agreed individually. The total annual salary of 14,000 Euros is paid out in 14 instalments. Health and social insurance will be covered by the University. Tuition exemption, additional support for students with children, and travel funding for research or conferences are included.

Employment requirements: Completed advanced degree (Magister/Diplom/Master) in History, History or History and Philosophy of Science, a natural science or Mathematics. Applicants with one or more relevant BA/BSc degrees will be considered in exceptional cases.

Topics to be researched should be linked with one of the topic areas of the IK. Information on the program’s aims, faculty, and topic areas can be found at one of the following web sites: http://univie.ac.at/geschichte/ash/initiativkolleg http://international.univie.ac.at/en/portal/initiativkollegs/i020/. For information about the „Vienna International Summer University,” see the web site: www.univie.ac.at/ivc/VISU.

Application procedure: The following documents should be submitted as part of an application for a studentship in the IK “The Sciences in Historical Context”: – A brief cover letter stating the reasons for applying – Curriculum vitae – Documentation of previous studies and copies of all university degrees received – An expose of the proposed dissertation project (maximum 5 pages) with bibliography (maximum one page) – Names of two references (with institutional affiliation and address)

In addition, a letter of recommendation from one of the named references (preferably the advisor of the latest degree thesis) should be sent separately by the deadline date either by Email or post.

Deadline: Students will be admitted at the beginning of the winter semester (1 October 2006), in exceptional cases at the beginning of the spring semester (1 March 2007). Admissions will be announced during the first week of July 2006. Applications are due by 14. June 2006 (postmark — air mail please! Simultaneous E-mail application recommended), addressed to the Speaker of the IK “The Sciences in Historical Context”, o.
