Purpose of Job

RMG is seeking to appoint a Curator of the Royal Observatory to join the Science and Technology Team, which is responsible for the display, intellectual care, interpretation and development of the science and technology collections, which include astronomy, navigation, cartography and timekeeping. Led by the Senior Curator of the History of Science, the team conducts high-quality research on the collections for exhibitions, displays, publications, learning and online projects. It also supports research by external scholars through academic partnerships and RMG’s fellowship and research programme, which includes a research internship scheme for the history of science and technology. While its work covers subjects relating to the whole Museum, the team has a key role in the interpretation of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, which was founded in 1675 to support efforts to improve navigation at sea but subsequently broadened its scientific activities.

The postholder will act as curatorial champion for the Royal Observatory, with their work focusing on researching and interpreting the Observatory’s history and the Museum’s collection of astronomical instruments and related material. RMG encourages interdisciplinary approaches and the Curator will also be expected to further this ethos, working closely with curators, academics and other specialist staff within the Museum and elsewhere.
