The American Philosophical Society, The Academy of Natural Sciences, The Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum and Arctic Studies Center (Bowdoin College), and the Philadelphia Area Center for History of Science announce “North By Degree,” a conference and film festival to be held May 21-24, 2008 in Philadelphia, PA., USA.

Established and emerging scholars will present papers on their new research. Discussion sessions will aim at advancing research on the history of Arctic exploration.

Sessions include the following topics: – Nationalism, identity, and exploration of northern regions – Consequences of culture contact – Issues of race and gender on expeditions – The culture of the explorer – Technological advancements and their impact on exploration – Increased understanding of the natural world – Arctic exploration as reflected in popular culture

The conference will take place at the American Philosophical Society and Academy of Natural Sciences and is funded in part by a grant to Philadelphia Area Center for History of Science from the National Science Foundation.
