“Wales, Culture and Commercial Television: the relationship between a new technology and cultural life in Wales in the 1950s and 60s”

Aberystwyth University’s Alumni are supporting a PhD studentship through the Annual Fund in celebration of the Department’s 40th anniversary in 2013 on the topic of: Wales, Culture and Commercial Television: the relationship between a new technology and cultural life in Wales in the 1950s and 60s

Television arrived in Wales as a new and exciting cultural force, challenging older forms of relationships and offering new ways of configuring cultural relations in society.

This doctoral research project (under the supervision of Professor Tom O’Malley and Dr Jamie Medhurst) will explore Welsh television in the 1950s and 1960 by examining why programmes were produced, the nature of the productions and the impact they had on Welsh society.

It will draw on the specialist skills of the Department in Welsh media history, policy and the history of theatre and performance. The research will draw on the holdings of a number of national media archives, in particular those deposited at The National Library of Wales.

In your application please included a statement of up to 1,000 words which outlines [a] why you consider yourself suited to conduct research in this area and [b] the particular area of research in Welsh television and society in the 1950s and 60s that you would like to study, why, and what research questions you would like to pursue.

This PhD is supported by Aberystwyth University’s Alumni through the Annual Fund and is

open to: UK/EU and non-EU applicants, at the rate of £15,000 per annum (incl. fees; stipend, travel)

Applicants should complete application forms which are available at: http://www.aber.ac.uk/en/tfts/prospective-students/prosp-pg/pg-apps-admissions/phd-applicants/

CLOSING DATE: 1 May 2013
