Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Independent Research Group: The History of Technology in China, (10th to 18th Century)

The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin, Independent Research Group I (Dagmar Schäfer) announces a postdoctoral fellowship for up to two years, start date either April 1 or September 1, 2009 (negotiable). Outstanding junior scholars (Ph.D. awarded no earlier than 2003) are invited to apply. Projects investigating Chinese approaches to practical and theoretical knowledge, its appropriation and changing expressions of ownership in the periods Song, Yuan, and Ming to mid-Qing (10th to 18th Century) are particularly welcome. We are interested in people with research interests and experience in challenging disciplinary boundaries such as History, Science and Technology, Economics, Philology or Philosophy, Art, Anthropology or Archeology. Candidates should be able to read and communicate in English and have language skills in Chinese — Modern and Classical. Fellowships are endowed with a monthly stipend between 1.900 and 2,300 € (fellows from abroad).
