At the University of Vienna (15 faculties, 4 centres, about 188 fields of study, approx. 9.400 members of staff, more than 90.000 students) the position of a University Assistant (prae doc) at the Department of Science and Technology Studies is vacant.

The Department of Social Studies of Science is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Social Studies of Science is a social science field with a strong interdisciplinary orientation. It focuses on the interactions of science, technology and society. The Department of Social Studies of Science is strongly research oriented. Within the research focus „Traces of a knowledge society in transition“, department research particularly analyses the relations of techno-sciences and publics and the cultures and practices of contemporary knowledge production. In teaching, the department offers the English language master program „Science-Technology-Society“.

Extent of Employment: 30 hours/week

Occupation group in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc)
On top of this relevant chargeable work experience determines the assessment to a particular salary grade.

Areas of work:
Areas of work cover research and teaching activities (holding classes due to extent regulations of wage agreement) as well as administrative duties.
The successful candidate will contribute to the administration and organisation of the department and its teaching, will offer courses and participate in research activities of the department. The candidate will develop and finish a dissertation in one of the main research areas of the department (techno-sciences and publics; cultures and practices of contemporary knowledge and technology production).

Profile:

  • University degree in the Social Sciences (Master or equivalent) or in any other field, given that the applicant can provide proof of significant prior qualifications in Science and Technology Studies
  • excellent knowledge in both theories and (particularly qualitative) methods of Science and Technology Studies
  • very good proficiency in both German and English (in speaking and writing)
  • flexibility and ability to work in a team
  • organisational skills, reliability, and high work motivation
