Departmental Information

Department Profile Internationally renowned as the home of the Edinburgh School, with its characteristic “strong programme” in the sociology of scientific knowledge, the Science Studies Unit has long been recognised as a centre of excellence for the study of the sociology, history, and philosophy of science, medicine and technology. Dedicated to an interdisciplinary approach to understanding theory and practice of science, technology and medicine, the Unit is part of a wider network of groups at Edinburgh University concerned with the social character and the social and economic implications of science and technology, under the umbrella of the University of Edinburgh Institute for the Study of Science, Technology and Innovation. The staff of the Unit collaborate closely with colleagues in Sociology, the Research Centre for Social Sciences, and INNOGEN: the ESRC Centre for Social and Economic Research on Innovation in Genomics. Through the individual interests of its four members of academic staff, the Unit also has active links to a number of other subject areas, both here in Edinburgh and in the wider academic community, including history, philosophy, law, medicine, physics, divinity, geography and business studies.
