Excellence Cluster 264 “Topoi – The Formation and Transformation of Space and Knowledge in Ancient Civilizations”, with funding from the Excellence Initiative at the Freie Universität Berlin and the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, is announcing 2 postdoctoral fellowships to begin on January 1, 2014. In accordance with DFG guidelines, the fellowship will be awarded for two years (with the possibility of renewal for a third year) and will include a stipend of between 1468 and 1570 euros per month (including research allowance). A child allowance will be made available in accordance with DFG guidelines.

The research group traces the development of materialist theories on the localization of cognitive faculties in the Hellenistic and Imperial periods. Fellowship recipients should pursue an original research project on the later history of Pneumatist medicine, focusing on the doctrines of Athenaeus of Attalia or on the doctrines of Archigenes of Apamea and Posidonius of Byzantium. The project advisor will be Prof. Dr. Philip van der Eijk (Institut für Klassische Philologie, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin).
